When you land 

For many, Faro is the starting point for all destinations in the Algarve so you’ll have many car-hire and transfer options to choose from if they are not already part of your package.  Alternatively, once you touch down you can take Urbanas Bus to get into the city centre in just under 20 minutes.

From there, you’ll have easy access to many popular Algarve resorts such as Vilamoura, Quarteira and Albufeira.  

Beaches, Golfing, and Adventure 

Beaches around Faro can get very busy but to find somewhere more tranquil, just hop on the ferry to Praia da Barreta, a very secluded beach on the nearby island of Ilha Deserta. 

Golfers in the Algarve will appreciate the year-round good weather on more than 30 quality courses, some designed by the likes of Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus.  

 For the more adventurous, the local diving centre, Hidroespaco can take you on an underwater voyage through Faro’s natural reefs, examining shipwrecks and meeting Faro’s famous marine life.  

Faro City 

If you are not heading to the Algarve’s famous beaches, Faro City is well worth a trip in itself. When exploring the city, keep in mind that Faro is dripping in history and begun life as a settlement during the Paleolithic Age with the Romans, Moors, and Christians all claiming ownership at various stages. Start your exploration in the old part of the city, and from there, it’s a short walk to Freedom Square (Praça da Liberdade), and check out Faro’s numerous museums. 

Eating Out 

Faro is packed with fine restaurants and cafés with prices to suit all budgets. The local cuisine is based around the fresh fish and seafood caught along 200 kilometres of coastline. Don’t leave the city without sampling Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams in white wine sauce). 

Shopping & Nightlife 

In Faro, shopaholics should make tracks for Rua de Santo Antonio, Rua de Francisco Gomes, Rua de Portugal and the Galerias Faro for some unique independent boutiques and real bargains. Party animals tend to congregate around St. Peter’s Cathedral and then disperse into the clubs and bars on Rua Conselheiro Bivar, Rua Do Sao Pedro, Rua Do Compromiso and Rua Do Prior.
