Shannon Airport has secured a place in the final bid to get a new route from Cologne, Germany for next year. What’s unusual about it is that the decision was made by a public vote.

In a novel ‘X Factor style’ competition German airline, Eurowings, has asked the general public to choose a destination they wish to fly to and Shannon Airport has learned today that it has beaten seven other European destinations to secured a place in the final.

It is the only airport in Ireland to get to this stage in the competition. The airport is now up against Mostar and Trapani in the final round of public voting which will be run through Facebook.

It’s the first time such a competition has been held. Shannon is now calling on the public to vote once again in the final push to help secure the Cologne route for Ireland.

The final vote opens for just one hour on Wednesday 11th October starting at 2.00pm and finishing at 3.00pm (GMT). The most-voted destination will feature in Eurowings’ 2018 summer schedule. Facebook users can cast their vote on (the link will also be available on

The airport is appealing to its loyal Ireland supporters to spread the word to the Irish diaspora around the world to vote also.

Speaking after hearing that Shannon Airport had made it to the final, Shannon Airport Managing Director Andrew Murphy urged the people to once more get behind Shannon’s bid to be the chosen route; “We were truly overwhelmed by the response and are so grateful to the public for taking the time to vote us into the final. We need your support again on Wednesday to land the new route for Ireland.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Irish public to positively impact on our country’s tourism industry. Given Shannon Airport’s excellent proximity to the Wild Atlantic Way and famous Irish tourist attractions like the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, a win for the airport would be a major boost for the Shannon region and Ireland as a whole,” he concluded.
