The Gathering gets unique interpretation with 70 piece exhibition at Shannon Airport by Limerick School of Art and Design Students

17 April 2013

Passengers departing Shannon Airport will, over the coming months, get to enjoy a unique interpretation of the emotional melting pot that an airport is thanks to a collaboration with students of the award winning Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD).

Launched at the airport today, ‘The Gathering’ is an exhibition by 70 Third Year students from the Department of Fine Art at the Limerick Institute of Technology run school.  The exhibition in the airports Departures Lounge explores and celebrates, through digital photography, a range of themes and emotions for The Gathering.

Students were encouraged to approach the brief in as conceptually broad a manner as possible and examine a diverse range of themes around notions of travel, cultural identity, tourism and place.  The end product is a diverse and impactful installation played out through a variety of media and imagery that will be enjoyed by passenger’s up to the end of June.

Launching the exhibition today, the airports Managing Director Mary Considine said that the students have delivered a truly unique and engaging interpretation of The Gathering.  “We came up with the idea late last year to collaborate with LIT and it’s School of Art & Design and the enthusiasm with which they have approached the project is shining through in this exhibition.

We gave them a wide open brief and what they have come back with reflects just why LSAD is rated in the top 50 schools of art and design in the world. It’s really engaging and you can see that already through the reaction of people coming through the airport.”

Said LSAD Head of School Mike Fitzpatrick:  “Our students were delighted to take up the offer of delivering their interpretation of The Gathering.  It was a great opportunity for them to show their creativity and insight and we are really delighted with the outcome.

Shannon Airport is, more than any other place on the western half of Ireland, where The Gathering comes to life this year and, indeed, every year.  It’s an international crossroads for Ireland, where people will reunite, where they say goodbye, where so much emotion happens and that was all the inspiration our students needed.

There are very few people across this region who do not have a memory or a connection with Shannon Airport and our students have done an excellent job in reflecting that through this exhibition.”
