Boost for holiday makers from West of Ireland as Ryanair adds popular Alicante service to its Shannon summer schedule

21 March 2013

Thursday, 21 March 2013: Options for holiday makers this summer from across the West of Ireland have been significantly strengthened today after Ryanair confirmed it is to operate direct flights to the hugely popular Alicante region from Shannon Airport.   In the latest addition to the attractive new services starting at Shannon Airport this summer, Ryanair will operate the Alicante service twice weekly flights, on Wednesdays and Fridays, commencing on June 5th and running through to September 27th.   The service, which last operated at Shannon in 2010, will be a real boost for holiday makers from the region with an estimated 40,000 of them travelling to other airports to get to Alicante/Murcia in each of the three years since the service last operated here.

Welcoming the news, Shannon Airport Authority Chairman Rose Hynes said, “This Ryanair announcement is really good news for thousands of holiday makers from this region as Alicante is one of the most popular sun destinations operated from this airport.  Thankfully, these people now have the pleasure and convenience again of flying from Shannon and we expect it will be a hugely successful route.  “We have had a really good start to life as an independent entity, with a range of new services in place for this year.  Alicante was at the top of our list in terms of European sun destinations we wanted to secure and we are delighted now that Ryanair has come on board with the service.  There is significant demand for additional services at Shannon and our job is to work as hard and as competitively as we can to ensure we deliver those.  “We will work closely with Ryanair with a view to ensuring the success of its existing routes and growing its services out of Shannon.”

In addition to Alicante, Ryanair is this year also increasing the frequency of its flights to Malaga and Palma during the peak summer months, as well as providing flights to Lanzarote, Tenerife, Nantes, Wroclaw, London Stansted, London Gatwick and Liverpool.  Shannon Airport Director Mary Considine said that Ryanair’s announcement confirms the significant opportunity there is to grow European services at the airport.  “Today’s announcement is another boost for Shannon Airport. We have been working particularly hard to secure the return of the Alicante route as it is one of the services in most demand according to our market research.”

The Alicante service, which will be on sale from 22 March at or, adds to other attractive new services commencing at Shannon over the coming months, including to Chicago, Philadelphia, Glasgow and Faro.
